How to Score More Points on AP Biology FRQs
The free-response section is where many students leave points on the table. Unlike MCQs, FRQs reward how you explain your reasoning, not just whether you know the fact. Here's how to maximize your FRQ score:
Short-Answer Questions (4 pts each)
- Answer the exact question asked. Each bullet or sub-part is a separate scoring point. Address each one directly — don't bundle everything into a paragraph.
- Use biological vocabulary correctly. Saying "the enzyme is denatured" earns the point; saying "the enzyme stops working" usually does not.
- Interpret graphs quantitatively. When a question shows a graph, include specific values from it in your answer. Vague descriptions like "it went up" rarely earn full credit.
- Connect evidence to reasoning. Rubrics almost always look for a mechanism, not just an observation. Say why, not just what.
Long-Answer Questions (9 pts each)
- Read the entire question before writing. LAQs often have multiple parts (a, b, c). Misreading the question is the most common way to lose points.
- Structure your answer around the sub-parts. Label each part clearly (Part A, Part B, etc.) so the reader can follow your response against the rubric.
- For experimental design questions: always include an independent variable, dependent variable, control group, and how you would measure results. These four elements almost always appear on the rubric.
- Don't over-write. More words don't mean more points. One correct, precise sentence per scoring point is better than a paragraph that circles around the answer.
AP Biology MCQ Strategy: Getting More Right in 90 Minutes
With 60 questions and 90 minutes, you have 1.5 minutes per question — which is tight for data-based items. Here's how to pace and perform:
- Read stimulus materials first. Many MCQ sets include a passage, graph, or experimental scenario. Skim it before reading the questions to anchor your understanding.
- Use process of elimination aggressively. Even eliminating one or two wrong answers significantly improves your odds on guesses.
- Watch for "except" and "not" questions. AP Biology occasionally uses negatively phrased questions. Underline the word "EXCEPT" or "NOT" to avoid misreading.
- Don't linger on hard questions. Mark them and move on. Spending 4 minutes on one question costs you the chance to answer three easier ones.
- Answer every question. There's no penalty for wrong answers — a blank is a guaranteed zero, but a guess has a 25% chance of being correct.
- Review your flagged questions in the last 10 minutes rather than rereading questions you already answered confidently.
